What changes on a bigger board
With nine more cells, a single bad tile rarely ends the game, and you can keep two or three chains going at once. That makes 2048 on 5x5 noticeably more forgiving, and it is a good place to practise the corner method from how to win 2048 without being punished for every slip. The flip side is length: making a 2048 tile still needs roughly 900 or more moves on any board, because every point of value has to arrive as a new 2 or 4.
How far can a 5x5 board go?
The biggest possible tile on an n×n board is 2 to the power of (n² + 1). On the standard 4×4 board that is 131,072. On 5×5 it is 67,108,864, and on 6×6 it is 137,438,953,472. In practice, nobody gets anywhere near those numbers; they just show how much room there is.
Tips for 5x5 and 6x6
- Keep one corner, just like on 4×4. The extra room is a buffer, not a reason to spread out.
- Fill your edge row before you build the next one. A full row of five is much harder to disturb.
- Do not rush: with more empty cells, you can afford to wait for the merge you want.
