2048 3x3 squeezes the game onto a 3 by 3 board with only nine cells. That is so little room that the 2048 tile is impossible here, so the goal is 256. For an even smaller puzzle, switch to 2×2 and try to make a 32. (A 2048 1x1 board would end on the first move, so 2×2 is as small as it gets.)
Can you make 2048 on a 3x3 board?
No. To build any tile you need every smaller tile on the board at the same time, and nine cells can only hold a chain that tops out at 1,024. The same rule gives 131,072 as the ceiling on the normal 4×4 board and 32 on 2×2.
How hard is it?
Very. We ran our 2048 AI on 40 games of each size. On 3×3 it reached 256 in 20 of the 40 games and never made a 512. On 2×2 it reached 32 in 3 games out of 40. If you make 256 on 3×3, you have matched a search program that looks several moves ahead.
Tips for the tiny board
- Think one move further than usual: every new tile takes one ninth of the board.
- Keep your biggest tile in a corner and your second biggest next to it, as on the big board.
- Merge as soon as you can. Waiting for a better merge rarely pays off when there are only one or two empty cells.
For the full method, see how to win 2048. If you want more room, the classic 2048 game uses the standard 4×4 board.
Questions
What is the highest tile possible in 2048 3x3?
1,024. Nine cells can hold a chain from 512 down to 4 plus one new 4, which collapses into 1,024 at most.
Why is the goal 256 and not 2048?
Because 2048 cannot be made on nine cells, and 512 is extremely rare. 256 is hard but reachable.
What is the 2x2 mode?
The smallest board: four cells, a goal of 32, and games that last under a minute.
